Lee Trundle depends what bit of Co.Durham.you are talking about. Some pricey places dotted about. and Durham.itself isnt cheap.

I managed a nightshelter for 2 years. 80% of the hundreds of people I dealt with were there directly because of drink or drug use. They had masses of other problems but they were manageable until you added booze, drugs or both. Rare was the person who was there just because they were mentally ill, or an ex squaddie or whatever else. And it wasn't a case of self medication. The booze and drugs were making their lives much worse and they knew it. Paedo's/nonces were the next biggest group. Anyone clean and together in the shelter nearly always turned out paedo or a nonce.

I think a lot of people don't realise how close some people are to homelessness generally. These bridges that most of us are lucky to have simply aren't there for some. Lose your job, couple of other things go against you and you're on the streets. Luckily most of us have more to fall back on.

worm, thats my thoughts. Of course there will be exceptions but by and large you must have done some cunty things to burn every bridge available to you and if that is the case as you said thats all on them.

The best book that I ever read about homelessness and violence and the alcohol abuse that goes with it is "The Grass Arena" by John Healy
It was written by a British bloke from an Irish family and concentrates on the 60's/70's in London.
All those in the Stratford Centre may be from abroad but I bet that everything in that book would still apply to them

Beer and drugs. It's always beer and drugs. There's usually a dash of mental health but even the mentalist of mentalists can be supported in accomodation providing they don't get at the beer and drugs.

I am not 100% sure as things may have changed but the majority of rough sleepers were those with mental health problems and care leavers who do.literally have nobody.
